South Africa
South Africa draws more tourists than any other country in Southern Africa, and for good reason. Wide open spaces, excellent game viewing, the charm of Cape Town and its outlying wine routes, and the pulsing African spirit of Johannesburg make South Africa the destination of choice for many travellers.
Geography:Visitors will be delighted by the physical extremes of the country, from the arid Karoo on the plateau to the snow-capped mountains of the Drakensberg, the subtropical coast of KwaZulu-Natal and the temperate valleys of Western Cape, which produce world-class wines. South Africa is also uniquely positioned at the meeting point of the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean. South Africa is bordered by Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Swaziland and Lesotho.
Climate:The South African climate is temperate with mild, dry winters (June to September) and warm summers with afternoon thunderstorms (October to May). Winter is the best time for game viewing as the bush is sparse and the animals are drawn to the watering holes.
Culture:South Africa has a diverse population. The “rainbow nation” has 11 official languages with Zulu, Xhosa and Afrikaans the most widely spoken. English is widely understood and is the language of business.
